GeneSight Testing

GeneSight is a cutting-edge yet simple genetic test that helps take the guesswork out of finding the right psychiatric medication for you. In plain language, GeneSight looks at how your DNA might affect your response to medications. With a quick cheek swab, it analyzes certain genetic markers and generates a personalized report on which medications may work best for your unique biology. In other words, it helps predict which treatments might work better for you and which might be more likely to cause unwanted side effects – all based on your own genes.

What is GeneSight Testing and How Does It Work?

GeneSight is a form of pharmacogenetic testing. It simply means the test examines how your genes could impact your medication outcomes. The process is easy, quick, and pain-free. We collect a DNA sample by gently swabbing the inside of your cheek – no needles, no blood, and it only takes a few seconds. This cheek swab is done right in our office during your visit. We then send the sample to the GeneSight lab. In about two weeks, the lab sends back a detailed report to Jessica with the results.

What do these results tell us? The GeneSight report analyzes dozens of common psychiatric medications – for depression, anxiety, ADHD, mood disorders, and more – and maps out which ones might be the best fit for you. It will indicate medications that are likely to work well, those that might require dose adjustments or closer monitoring, and those that could be less effective or higher risk for you based on your genetics. This helps us tailor your treatment plan with far more insight than trial-and-error alone.

Why We Offer GeneSight Testing

Solace Psychiatry and Wellness is committed to truly personalized, empathetic psychiatric care. We offer GeneSight testing because we have seen how transformative it can be for patients. Many people struggle with finding the right medication – it can be frustrating or even traumatic to try one prescription after another and endure difficult side effects or little improvement. We understand this struggle. By using GeneSight, we can gain valuable insights from your genetics to help choose a medication that’s more likely to work well for you from the start. This means potentially fewer side effects and fewer medication changes for you. It’s one of the tools we use to ensure your treatment is as unique as you are.

While GeneSight is completely optional, it is often our top recommendation for patients who are starting a new psychiatric medication or who have had challenges with medications in the past. We offer this test as part of our commitment to providing the best possible outcome with the least amount of trial-and-error.

Benefits of GeneSight Testing for You

GeneSight testing can be especially beneficial if you have experienced any of the following:

  • Troublesome Side Effects: If you are sensitive to medications or have had strong side effects from past psychiatric drugs, GeneSight might help identify options that could be gentler for your body.

  • Multiple Medications Didn’t Work: GeneSight can reveal if certain medications are less likely to work given your genetic makeup, helping focus on options that have a better chance of helping you feel better sooner.

  • Treatment-Resistant Conditions: If your depression, anxiety, or other condition hasn’t improved with standard treatment, this test offers a new angle.

  • Want to Avoid Trial and Error: Even if you’re new to medication, GeneSight gives an extra layer of guidance from the very beginning, so we can make informed decisions and hopefully avoid a lot of experimentation.

Quick and Painless Testing Process

One of the best parts of GeneSight testing is how simple and convenient it is. The test is administered right in our office at Solace Psychiatry & Wellness. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Cheek Swab: A trained staff member will rub a soft swab on the inside of your cheek to collect a DNA sample. It does not hurt at all – no needles, no discomfort.

  2. Send to Lab: We package your sample and send it to the GeneSight laboratory the same day.

  3. Results in ~2 Weeks: In approximately 14 days, the lab sends back a comprehensive report to us.

  4. Reviewing Your Results: We schedule a follow-up to go over the report together. We will explain what the results mean in plain language and how to use them to guide your treatment.

Insurance Coverage and Cost

GeneSight is covered by most insurance providers. Medicaid typically covers the test with no out-of-pocket cost. Many private insurance plans also cover the test, and even if they don’t, most patients pay $330 or less. GeneSight’s billing team handles the insurance process and will notify you before processing if your out-of-pocket cost is expected to be high. Financial assistance and interest-free payment plans are available.

Optional – Your Comfort and Choice Come First

GeneSight testing is entirely optional. We may recommend it because of its potential benefits, but the decision is always yours. If you feel uneasy about genetic testing for any reason, you will never be pressured into it. You can absolutely still receive excellent psychiatric care at Solace Psychiatry & Wellness without ever taking this test.

If you prefer not to take psychiatric medication or want to explore non-medication approaches first, we will support that plan wholeheartedly. GeneSight is most useful when choosing a medication, but your care will remain personalized and compassionate with or without it.

In short, GeneSight is an additional resource we offer to support your healing—never a requirement for care.
